Hiring: Is It Art or Science? 3

Have you ever relied on a ‘gut feeling’ when making personnel decisions? Some may argue that recruitment is an art and that you can judge whether a candidate is a perfect match through simple observation and experience. Others believe that a more scientific approach is needed. Processes are put in place and candidates are filtered through assessment tools.

Our take at KRP?

We believe the recruitment process is a combination of both – art and science. While we take advantage of proven screening assessments and tools, hiring for personality is just as important for us to maintain a positive workplace culture. Equally important is diversity, and by that we don’t just focus on gender and ethnicity, but also on age. Why? Research shows that age diversity drives innovation. It improves performance and productivity and helps reduce staff turnover. We see this firsthand at KRP. Our employees’ ideas have led to many creative solutions over the years, which improved our sustainability, earned us awards and reduced costs.

Our staff and tenant retention metrics are proof that we’re on the right track. As the landlord of choice for Ottawa’s technology community, we own and operate 34 buildings spanning over 3.1 million square feet of space across two fully-developed business parks in Kanata North. Several of our key tenants have called our properties home for more than 20 of the 30+ years we have been in business. That’s an impressive retention metric. We’re even prouder of our staff retention metric. Our low staff turnover rate is a testament to the corporate culture we’ve built over the years.

What fuels our corporate culture?

Strong values, a clear vision and a management team that leads by example. We work hard, but we also have fun at KRP, and by fun – we mean FUN! Team is everything, and whether we’re celebrating birthdays, business milestones or are just having a blast competing in a Halloween pumpkin carving contest, the sky’s the limit!

What’s also important: Location, location, location! Just a few steps away from our offices is a network of walking and bike trails that wind through the campus and connect to the city’s system of trails. Day in and day out, you’ll find our teams take time away from their busy days to walk, ski, snowshoe, bike or just grab a picnic lunch with colleagues.

What’s more, our sites are accessible. It’s easy to get to KRP Properties. Kanata North is near several major arterial routes, including the 417, March Road, Carling Avenue and Terry Fox Drive. It’s also well served by the OC Transpo bus system and by extensive networks of bike pathways. Whatever way you choose to come here in the morning and go home at the end of the day, you have plenty of options.
